My husband is an addict and his father and mother were together all his life. No missing role models...

It may be one of the factors. It is not always easy to say why a person gets addicted to drugs. Some start out of curiosity and then reach a point of no return. Some do it because of peer pressure. Often it is because of lack of healthy atmosphere in the family-broken family, abusive parent, etc.
