Addicts get needles and the actual heroin from very different places. They obviously get the gear from Dealers / Shotters. Most addicts get needles ('fresh pins') from Chemists and Needle Exchanges. Where a Needle Exchange is an option most users won't go to a Pharmacy simply because a Needle Exchange also provides other paraphernalia and services such as... Cookers (Small tin dishes with handles used to mix the heroin and heat it so that it dissolves and provides an inject-able solution) Vit C Powder (A Vitamin C powder which is added to the solution to help break down the heroin, which due to the impurities in street gear can other wise be a long and maddening process) Sterile Wipes (used to clean injection sites) Needles of various sizes (Most users use the orange capped 1m pins, but long time junkies who've exhausted the veins in their arms etc sometimes opt for pins which make injecting in the groin for example easier) Literature (Giving users advice on how and where to inject so that they avoid unnecessary health complications and where / how to seek help) Key Workers (Drugs councilors able to give advice, therapy, support and referrals to doctors etc) Pharmacies / Chemists can only provide clean needles, if anything, and will often refuse to serve junkies or do not have the size needles some junkies want. To further your research (thus, better your story) why not visit a local needle exchange, explain what you are doing and ask for some information. |
