Like a user has already said, its methadone treatment to replace the heroin, but in the UK at least, they do drug addiction counciling as well. sister is a drug addiction councilor and sometimes works in prisons doing both one to one and group therapy. The organisation she works for has some good programmes for the prisoners when they get out as well, its a bit like school/ college-the courses last for a few months, also helps build skills and they have a good success rate against further addiction.

Yes, most of them have opiate withdrawal/ detox programmes. However, they are basic, and it's important to remember that it's prison, not The Priory, and they have limited resources.

I would think they would do what medical treatment is required.

Excuse me, but i wonder why you would wonder about this. You planning to get into prison or something? ok, to answer your question, i think they wouldnt give heroine to inmates. the inmates have to obtain it illegally, i think.

I don't know if prisons do or not. maybe you could ask to go to a reab hospital to control your drug cravings. when you're there you can't leave and have groups and stuff like that. when you get there they'll do a detox thing to help the withdrawal. when you're doing good you'll go to an out-patient house, but you still can't leave without permission and they do drug tests when you leave and when you get back. i don't know if they'll let you do that or if you'll still need to go to prison after. the jail here doesn't do much for withdrawals. they just keep them in a single-cell and let the withdrawal happen. i think they give them pain pills though. i was told by the jail adminastrator that they don't do alot, just the pills, because they won't die or anything. it'll just be uncomfortable for a while. the jail adminastrator is my friend's dad, that's how i know.
