Question: Does methadone cause infertility in men?

My husband goes to one of those methadone clinics, and we are talking about trying to have a baby. He's 32, Im just wondering if Methadone has any affects of the ability to have children? Does it make it harder, or cause any problems in the sperm that may lead to birth defects at all? Thanks!

There are some studies that point to a link between methadone and low testosterone levels which in turn can affect the sperm and a man's fertility. The majority of men on methadone have no fertility issues though and it has not been completely verified that methadone does in fact affect the testosterone level. I don't think it's anything you should worry about. I personally know hundreds of methadone patients and I have not met a single one having trouble conceiving. Methadone does not cause any kind of birth defects when used by the mother or the father. Medications used by the man does not cause birth defects. Certain medications used by the mother during the pregnancy can cause birth defects but methadone is not one of them. It's actually commonly used in pregnant women. I just wanted to mention that I hope that issues around conceiving will not cause your husband to get off methadone. The relapse rates when methadone patients get off methadone are very high. The sooner someone get off the higher the risks of relapse are. If your husband relapses having children and a family goes out the window. Good luck! I hope you'll have a baby soon.
