Pain killer addiction?

Question: Pain killer addiction?

(Posted by: madeintheusa1234 on 2007-09-02 18:25:10)

Iam a 22 year old housewife and in the last year I had 3 surgeries due to a car accident. The doctors fed me painkillers left and right and now Iam totally dependant on them. I go without 2 or 3 days and the withdrawals are horrible! Iam strong one minute and weak the next. I KNOW Im addicted and I KNOW I dont want to be! Yet I know 4 doctors in town that if I call them I can have pain killers in my hand within the hour. PLUS u can actually get them ON LINE with a credit card!!!! This thing I have become is NOT me and I miss me so much, my hubby travels for his job and is only home on weekends so he knows I take them but doesnt know I take 16 to 20 a day! This is my 3rd day without them and Im really dying for them BUT I refuse to do it! Anyone else that is addicted to these little white pills? GOD!!!!

Well I Don`t think there is any easy way to detox.Unless you have the thousands of bucks or insurance to inter treatment.I am writing today by the grace of God.I am self detoxing as I write this.I take pain meds for a broken back. And got to the place they did not work.Last week after taking 1080mg`s of codeine and doing 100mg`s of morphine that day and still hurting I dumped what was left of my meds in the toilet.Granted I wish I hadn`t a few day`s later !! But I can not taper off.So I have been in a world of hurt for the past week to say the least.Still I am shaking but the sweating and running to the bath room have stopped. And still can`t sleep very well. But I noticed the smell of fall this morning when I walked out side.Every nerve ending on my body is up.I can feel the pain that I have not felt in years. But I can smell and notice things I haven`t in a long time. And I will enjoy it while it last.I have had to take these drugs for years. And they up my dose when I ask.And in a day I can get my refills. This week will be my Fentanyl patches.I take one 75mcg a day when they stick. And they work good when they stick.encase you don`t know they are 7 to 8 times stronger than morphine.I have been off then as well. If you can take the pain don`t take the pills. But if you hurt if have to do what you have to do.I wish I could take the pain and not the the meds. But I can`t.So like you say being normal and yourself again is a good thing.I am feeling that way kinda now.But soon I will be back in the dark of numbness.Because I can take the pain but my pain meds will work better for me I hope.I get my other refills next week and will sink deeper. But I can function.I can not function this way I am now.And that sucks !! But my lower back was crushed. They can fix bone but not nerve`s,and that is what causes my pain.So like I say if you need the meds it sucks. If you don`t please do not start if you can take the pain.Your 22 years old !!! I`m 50 now and have been on these meds since 1999.Do be me when you are 50 !! But one other thing.I can not tell my doctor what is going on.I`d loose my meds !! Well maybe not all,and that may be good in a way.But I cant risk it. Read other`s thought`s here.In the end it`s your call.Only you know what is best for you.I wish you the best of luck.Damn it is hard to type with shaking hands much less sit here and type.So I have to go.........PS I am not a Brittney Spears Fan !! I did self detox a couple years ago.So I knew what I was asking myself to do.But I forgot about the pain of it all. It`s not easy or fun.But had to be done !!

Instead of going cold turkey have you tried tapering off them slowly? Make a plan with your calendar and go down slowly. Until eventually you don't take them at all anymore. If you wean your body off them slowly your withdrawls will not be as severe. Your body is dependent upon them. I was on a high level for the same reason as you and after my last back surgery I went down slowly over several months. It was my doctor who tapered me off. In the long run you will be glad you did. If that doesn't work really consider going to a clinic/ spa type place to help with it.

Acknowledgement of the problem is a good step towards weaning oneself from dependence. Please gradually decrease the dosage as tolerated from 16 tablets per day x 2 days to 15 tablets x 2 days to 14 tabs x 2 days and so on until you have completely weaned yourself off from the narcotics. In the meantime, please drink plenty of fluids to flush the toxins out of your body, exercise as much as you can tolerate, and keep busy to divert your mind from the craving. All the best to you.

I also had this problem and it sucks! After a break in I started getting bad panic attacks. The doctor continued prescribing xanax in stronger and stronger doses. Stopping cold turkey can actually be very bad. I know with the xanax you ca actually go into seizures. They recommended I start taking vitamins (B6) to aide in withdraw. You need to see someone ASAP that can help you. Don't do this alone. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking out a therapist or drug counselor to help you.

Hi, I've been on large doses of opioid pain killers for years, including methadone for pain control. About the only way to get off them, is to cut the dosage SLOWLY,(this may take months depending on the type of prescription dosages etc) if you don't have the power to do this, have a family member or someone close manage your meds for you. I've done this numerous times, but it should also be done under the care of a physician....hope this helps
