It releases too many 'feel good' chemicals in the brain.... makes you want it all the time.

Opium derived pain killers are given in hospitals to patients who are in great pain thus just like any other drug become addictive if taken for too long.

I have no idea! I just started Methadone. Why anyone would want to take it on purpose is beyond me! it makes me feel shaky, weak, nauseaus, just plain yucky. I hate opiods and have to be on them b/ c of my chronic pain condition.

Well there are two different types of addiction. There is the physical need for the drug because of long-term use and there is the emotional need for the drug because of the euphoria it produces. Essentially, opiate addiction occurs because the body becomes accustomed to having opiates in the body (which bind to opioid receptors) and builds a tolerance. When this happens the body quits releasing its own natural painkillers, endorphins, and so when the drug is stopped the person experiences serious withdrawal symptoms. The brain craves more of the drug to counteract these painful, flu-like symptoms. This causes the cycle to continue unless the user is able to get past the initial week and the brain starts to repair its own painkilling system and the user begins to feel better.
