I was addicted to pain medication for over 10 years. I am now in recovery from my addiction after going into a treatment center for 7 weeks. I don't recomend you try to do it on your own. You will be much more sucessfull if you get professional help. I tried many times to quit on my own and I always went back to using. I have been clean for over 2 months now and feel so much better. My life had gotten so far out of control that I almost died, and I did not care if I died or not, that was the scary part. I didn't start out addicted to the medicine, I was prescribed the meds for legitimate pain from a work accident. I was on a lot of different pills and got a large amount every month to manage the pain. It was only a matter of time before I started abusing the meds. I feel 100% better today and am glad I went through treatment, it was the best thing I have ever done for myself.

My mom is on high doses of pain pills, and the only way she can get off them is if the doctors weans her- if she stops cold turkey she would end up in the hospital. If these pills are being taken for 'fun' smoke some weed instead... but I say dont just stop taking them, the withdraw can be ugly.

I haven't gotten off mine yet, I have chronic pain, but if I wanted to my pain management doctor would take me off little by little. If your taking 30 pills a week say, the following week you would cut 1 pill out so you would be taking 29 pills a week, the next week cut 1 pill out so you would be taking 28 pills and so on an so on until your down to 1 pill. Its the safest way to do it and its so gradual that you won't have any withdrawal. It just takes time but it will work..Good luck

Talk to your doctor. Sometimes it is not safe to quit cold turkey.
